Check your Body Mass Index in seconds
BMI compares your weight with your height to give a quick sense of whether your weight is in a healthy range. It’s widely used by doctors, insurers and fitness programmes as a first check.
For South Asian adults, research shows risks such as diabetes rise at lower BMI values, which is why Indian guidelines use 23 as the upper limit of normal. Use the number as a starting point for a conversation with your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². For 70 kg and 1.75 m, BMI = 70 ÷ 3.06 = 22.9.
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy (WHO). For South Asian adults, Indian guidelines suggest staying below 23, since health risks start at lower BMI.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a quick screening number. It doesn’t measure body fat directly, so it can misread athletes, older adults, pregnant women and children. Talk to a doctor for a proper assessment.
Can I use this for children?
No. Children and teens need age- and sex-specific BMI charts. This calculator is for adults aged 18 and over.
